The Marche
Le Marche, a captivating region in central Italy, is beautifully nestled between the Adriatic Sea to the east and the Apennine Mountains to the west. Unlike other Italian regions that are globally renowned and attract millions of visitors, Le Marche is often described as "an authentic hidden gem." It is celebrated for its diverse landscapes, rich history, authentic culture, a less-crowded atmosphere, and a high quality of life, frequently summarized by the slogan "Italy in one region."
The Marche region boasts unique geography and landscapes, including rolling hills, mountains with peaks reaching over 2,000 meters, and a diverse coastline, particularly around the Monte Conero area. The region's history was significantly influenced by the Piceni, who left numerous archaeological remains, and the Vatican State, which ruled until the unification of Italy. However, Le Marche reached its golden age during the Renaissance, especially in Urbino, under the enlightened patronage of Federico da Montefeltro.
The region's cuisine, known as cucina marchigiana, is a delightful reflection of its diverse landscape, blending hearty mountain flavors with fresh seafood from the Adriatic coast. It is characterized by its simplicity, authenticity, and an emphasis on high-quality local ingredients.
Among the several typical dishes, we can mention: Olive all’Ascolana (olives stuffed with meat, egg, vegetables, and cheese), Vincisgrassi (a type of rich lasagna), Ciauscolo (a soft, spreadable salami), Crescia (a flatbread similar to piadina), Maccheroncini di Campofilone (hair-thin egg pasta strands), large Ravioli traditionally filled with sheep's milk ricotta, Brodetto (a fish stew), and Stoccafisso all’Anconetana (Ancona-style Stockfish).
For wines, we have: Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi, Rosso Conero, Rosso Piceno, Pecorino, and Passerina.
When tourists and locals meet, both are satisfied by the encounter. Tourists genuinely interact and receive a warm welcome from the locals, who are happy to share the beauties of their region.
