Le Cinque Terre

The Cinque Terre (Five Lands) is a coastal stretch on the Riviera di Levante in Liguria, renowned worldwide for its extraordinary beauty and the harmonious fusion of human endeavor and wild nature. This landscape, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and protected as a National Park, is characterized by steep hills that plunge dramatically into the Liguarian Sea, shaped by man into terraces (called fasce) supported by the famous dry-stone walls, where vines and olive trees are cultivated.

The area comprises five ancient seaside villages, connected by a dense network of trails, including the famous Sentiero Azzurro (Blue Path), and by the railway line, which is the most convenient means of travel between them. The five jewels are: Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso.

The Cinque Terre: A Treasure of the Ligurian Riviera

The Five Villages

  • Riomaggiore: It is the easternmost village and the first encountered when arriving from La Spezia. Characterized by the typical colorful, vertically developed tower-houses, Riomaggiore descends along the steep ridge to a small, charming natural harbor. It is the starting (or ending) point of the famous Via dell'Amore (Path of Love), which is currently partially closed or has limited access for restoration work.
  • Manarola: Perched on a high cliff, Manarola is perhaps the most photographed village, with its pastel-colored houses that seem to merge with the rock. Famous for the production of the local wine, Sciacchetrà, and for the world's largest illuminated Nativity Scene (during the Christmas season), it offers breathtaking views, especially at sunset.
  • Corniglia: Unique among the Cinque Terre in not being directly on the sea, Corniglia stands on a rocky promontory about 90 meters above sea level. To reach it from the station, it is necessary to climb the Scalinata Lardarina, a long switchback staircase with 33 flights and about 382 steps, or take a bus. It offers an unparalleled panoramic view of all five villages.
  • Vernazza: Considered one of Italy's most beautiful villages, Vernazza is a true gem, with its small natural harbor surrounded by colorful houses. Its defensive history is evidenced by the Doria Castle and the Belforte Bastion, which offer splendid viewpoints over the coast. The Church of Santa Margherita d'Antiochia, with its octagonal bell tower, dominates the main square.
  • Monterosso al Mare: It is the westernmost village and, unlike the others, boasts the largest and sandiest beach in the area, in the Fegina district. Divided into two parts – the old town and the Fegina area – it is the only one with a more traditional seaside promenade. It is home to the colossal Statue of the Giant (Statua del Gigante), a reinforced concrete sculpture that once adorned the villa situated on the cliff.

The villages of the Cinque Terre are the ideal destination for those who love trekking, nature, and the flavors of Ligurian cuisine, such as trenette al pesto, focaccia, and local anchovies, accompanied by a glass of Vermentino or Sciacchetrà wine.
