Etruscan Tuscany: An Eight-Day Journey Through History

 

Necropoli Banditaccia

D01: ROME - VITERBO

The journey begins on Day 1 in Rome. Upon arrival at Rome airport, you will meet your guide and board your bus, then head north. Your first stop is the Cerveteri necropolis of Banditaccia, the oldest evidence of the Etruscan-Italic world. Afterwards, you continue to Viterbo, the "City of Popes," to explore the medieval San Pellegrino quarter and the stunning Palazzo Dei Papi with its unique Loggia Delle Benedizioni. Dinner in a local trattoria features traditional acquacotta soup and local wines. Overnight in an agriturismo near Viterbo.

 

Bomarzo

D02: LAKE BOLSENA - SORANO

Day 2 is dedicated to exploring the Tuscia region. In the morning, your journey takes you to Lake Bolsena, the largest volcanic lake in Europe, to enjoy the views. You will explore the surprising Parco Dei Mostri Di Bomarzo, a unique monumental park, and visit Civita Di Bagnoregio, one of Italy's most handsome hamlets. After soaking in the vistas, you head to Sorano, one of the most striking Tufa towns, built on a dramatic rock spur. Dinner at the stunning old borgo of Sorano. Overnight in an agriturismo in the Etruscan area (Sorano-Pitigliano-Sovana).

   

Pitigliano

D03: SORANO - SOVANA - PITIGLIANO - TUFO AREA

Day 3 begins with an early start as you make your way to Sovana, a small village that was an important Etruscan center. You will enjoy an excursion to the volcanic rupestrian environment of Sovana, with the remains of the major Etruscan monuments. Following your visit, a short drive takes you to Pitigliano, famously known as "Little Jerusalem" and carved spectacularly into the tufa rock. The afternoon is dedicated to delving into the Tufo Area, exploring the ancient Vie Cave (Sunken Roads). To conclude your day, you can enjoy a bath in the natural spring hot waters in Saturnia. Dinner will be at a local trattoria before settling in for an overnight stay in the same agriturismo.

 

Vulci

D04: ETRUSCAN TRACK - VULCI

Day 4 takes you deep into the Etruscan Track. You will journey along the river Fiora to see the rupestrian church of San Colombano. You will visit the Etruscan Necropolis of Tarquinia, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its painted tombs. Afterwards, you will head to the Vulci Archaeological Park to explore the remains of the ancient Etruscan city, the magnificent Roman bridge, and the Abbadia Castle. You will spend the night in a charming agriturismo in the Maremma area. (Optional stop at Saturnia for a thermal bath).

 

 

MonteOliveto

D05: VAL D’ORCIA

Day 5 heads north to the Val D’Orcia, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape dedicated to the Monastic Orders. Your visit will include the Abbey Of Monte Oliveto Maggiore and the untouched Abbey Of Sant’Antimo. You will visit Montalcino, the birthplace of the world-renowned Brunello Di Montalcino wine, with a wine and olive oil tasting as a highlight. Then you continue on to Pienza (known for its delicious Pecorino Toscano cheese) for dinner in a trattoria. Overnight in Cortona.

 

 

Duomo Siena

D06: CORTONA - SIENA

Day 6 begins with a visit to the Cortona hamlet, an Etruscan capital and hilltop town, to explore its charming medieval streets. Next, you will journey to Siena, a city woven with the history of the Guelf and Ghibelline factions. You will explore important sites, including the magnificent Siena Cathedral (Duomo), the Spedale, and the Piazza Del Campo. Later, you will enjoy a unique experience: a guided visit of Siena led by representatives of the local “Contrada” (neighborhood), concluding with dinner in the Contrada private club. Overnight in Siena.

 

 

Siena

D07: SIENA – VOLTERRA

Day 7 allows for free time in Siena in the morning, starting with breakfast outdoors in Piazza Del Campo. Afterwards, you will head along a scenic country road to Volterra, an ancient walled city with a rich Etruscan, Roman, and medieval history. You will explore the Etruscan Museum and the remains of the Roman Theatre. You will then have free time in the late afternoon and evening to walk among Volterra’s streets, famous for alabaster craftmanship, and enjoy an aperitivo. Dinner and overnight stay will be in Volterra or a nearby agriturismo.

 

 

 

Pisa

D08: VOLTERRA - PISA AIRPORT

 

Day 8 is dedicated to a leisurely breakfast before you head to Pisa. In case of spare time, you will visit the iconic Piazza Dei Miracoli and the Leaning Tower for a final photo opportunity or take a short trip to San Piero A Grado Abbey. Finally, you will continue to Pisa airport to catch your flight and return home.

 

 

Upon request, we can include a tour of Rome.

 

The individual participation fee includes:

- All the transfers by private bus + driver
- Hotels 3-4 stars or typical tuscan Agriturismo (Double Occupancy B&B)
- Half Board (dinner in typical restaurants or hotel)
